On February 3rd, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah has called for the universal and unconditional application of children's rights, urging the world to reject the status quo that deems some children's suffering acceptable based on their name, faith, or the land of their birth.

She stated that every child has an equal claim to protection and care, regardless of their suffering. Queen Rania highlighted that one in six children on Earth now live in areas affected by conflict, where dozens are killed or maimed daily. They are robbed of every right – to life and security, education, health, privacy, and protection from abuse.

She decried scenes of children's suffering broadcast worldwide on news outlets and social media, stating that their lived reality is too graphic for even adults to watch. She urged the global community to uphold the promise of "every right, for every child" rather than differentiating between young people based on their status.

“In truth, nothing is worth the life of a child,” the Pope said. “To kill children is to deny the future.”

The World Summit on Children's Rights was organized by the Pontifical Committee of the World Children’s Day, which was established by Pope Francis in 2023 to promote the Catholic Church’s mission of advocating respect for the rights and dignity of children. The event gathered distinguished voices and experts from around the world to highlight global challenges to children’s rights that require urgent collective commitment.

The Summit was attended by Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, Former Italian Prime Minster Mario Draghi, Climate Reality Project Founder and Chairman Al Gore, and Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, among others.

On February 04th 2025, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, accompanied by Italian First Lady Laura Mattarella, paid a visit to the 'Jordan: Dawn of Christianity' exhibition at the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome on Tuesday, where she encouraged Europeans to visit Jordan and discover its rich legacy.

The month-long exhibition, held under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II, is a collaboration between Jordan's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Jordan Tourism Board, and the Vatican.

Her Majesty and the Italian First Lady inspected the exhibition, which included 90 artefacts from over 30 distinct archaeological sites in Jordan, with the goal of highlighting the country's historical relevance to Christianity.

Queen Rania of Jordan has invited visitors to an exhibition commemorating 30 years of diplomatic ties between the country and the Holy See. The exhibition showcases Jordan's exceptional cultural wealth and its thriving Christian community, one of the oldest in the world. The Queen praised Jordan's hospitality and the rich history of its ancient civilizations. The displays trace the evolution of Christianity in Jordan across various time periods, from the baptism of Christ to the present Hashemite era.

According to Her Majesty's website, "The exhibition also features artifacts from five pilgrimage sites in Jordan, including Mount Nebo, the memorial of Prophet Moses; Tel Mar Elias, the birthplace of Prophet Elijah; Our Lady of the Mountain Church, a shrine commemorating Mother Mary; Machaerus, the site of John the Baptist’s martyrdom; and the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ.

Coinciding with the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee Year under the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ and featuring archeological items never before displayed outside of Jordan, the exhibition aims to serve as an open invitation for the world to explore Jordan’s spiritual and cultural treasures and its rich biblical landscape.

Her Majesty Queen Rania granted an interview with Indian media, Indian Times where she emphasises the importance of women's leadership in business and governance, and calls for inclusive education systems. She also highlights the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and urges a sustainable solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Here is the excerpts of the interview:

What are the biggest barriers to women's leadership in business and governance, and how can they be reimagined?

Women's rise into leadership roles has been slow, but significant. In 1960, there was only one female head of state - in 2023, 60 countries were headed by female leaders, as were just over 10% of Fortune 500 companies. Every success story provides more proof of women's unique leadership qualities, such as the tendency to listen before leaping into action, and to choose cooperation over competition. Ensuring women's pathways to leadership positions is smart business. As multiple studies have shown, companies with more women on their boards outperform those without. If economies want to attract and foster talented women, they need to provide stable, flexible, family-friendly workplaces.

How can education systems be reshaped to create a more inclusive future?

An inclusive future begins with inclusive education. Unfortunately, millions of children worldwide are robbed of their right to education due to conflicts, instability, and governments failing to make it a priority. All children deserve better. Education must also be constantly adapted to keep up with our fast-paced world. It's not just about improving standardized test scores; it is about fostering creative, driven youth. Through emerging technologies, including AI, and highly-skilled educators, we must continue to reinvent education from the ground up to prepare upcoming generations for any curveballs life throws their way.

What are your thoughts on the ceasefire currently taking effect in Gaza? Do you believe it is a hopeful sign of future peace?

The ceasefire has brought some relief. The bombs have stopped, and aid is coming in. However, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic: 90% of homes, 90% of schools, and nearly every hospital is in ruins. Recovery and reconstruction will be a long, arduous process, requiring enormous levels of global support. My country Jordan has been active on this front, coordinating aid via airbridge and truck convoys.

A ceasefire is just the beginning. The ongoing targeting and displacement of Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank is proof that we need a lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We cannot go back to the days before this war. That status quo has been broken forever, and the future needs to include respect for international law, self-determination for the Palestinian people, and mutual security for all.

Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah will participate in the World Summit on Children's Rights, which Pope Francis is convening on February 3rd, 2025, at the Vatican.

Her remarks are scheduled for the first panel of the day.

Prior to the summit, Her Majesty granted an interview to Italian media Corriere della Sera.

Below is the transcript of the interview:

"What is the most pressing issue facing children today? What should governments do?

Every child is born with the same right to life, health, and safety. These rights are not subjective or political; they are fundamental human rights. Yet, the biggest obstacle to children's wellbeing today is that these rights are not equally applied.

Many boys and girls around the world are unjustly denied the protections to which they are entitled. Their suffering should break all our hearts, whether they are in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Haiti, Ukraine, or anywhere else. Yet, many people hold their compassion based on race, faith, or nationality.

Governments have a collective responsibility to safeguard the world's children. That begins by recognizing all young people's rights, respecting international law, and holding those who harm children accountable. The world needs to do better.

Since becoming Queen of Jordan, you have worked to revitalize schools, empower women, and improve child and family protection services. You also established the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF). Are you satisfied with the progress?

Education reform is an ongoing process. There is always room for improvement. Jordan's education sector has faced challenges in recent years, such as accommodating refugee children from neighboring countries into public schools and switching to remote learning during the pandemic. Still, our ambitions for Jordanian children are limitless.

Education is about more than just test scores or workforce readiness; it is about fostering generations that can come up with creative solutions for the world's problems. In our ever-changing world, we need to constantly reinvent education from the ground up, and make the most of emerging technologies, including AI.

You recently issued a heartfelt appeal for the children of Gaza. Does this ceasefire bring a glimmer of hope?

For the past 15 months, the people of Gaza have been holding their breath, focused solely on keeping their families alive. The ceasefire has allowed them to catch their breath – but I'm sure the hope and relief they feel is accompanied by a sense of grief.

Israel has killed tens of thousands of boys and girls, and survivors are now dealing with lost loved ones, malnourishment, life-long injuries, learning loss, and psychological trauma. Their homes, schools, and neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble. They are still in desperate need of protection.

Some people prefer not to think about Palestinian children's pain. Some even try to justify it. But a child is a child, and the world has failed Palestinian children over and over again. The global community must move quickly to end their suffering.

Last year, you became a grandmother. Has this new experience changed you in any way? What are your hopes for your grandchild and their parents?

Being around little Iman is a reminder of just how precious all children are and of what really matters. I find it hard to drag myself away from her, and I look forward to our video calls when I am traveling for work!

I have gained a new appreciation for the simple joys in life since little Iman came along. I am also so proud seeing Al Hussein and Rajwa enter this stage of life. They are wonderful parents, and are relishing their new roles.

Who inspires you? Who are your role models?

I am most inspired by ordinary people who show extraordinary courage and compassion. That is why I cherish my meetings with Jordanians working behind the scenes to uplift others, whether they are educators, social workers, entrepreneurs, or devoted parents. And, in recent months, I have been in constant awe of health workers in Gaza, who have braved Israeli airstrikes and the risk of unlawful detention to care for the injured. Despite being hungry, displaced, and exhausted, they kept showing up for their people. Their selflessness under fire is an example to us all.

You will participate in the World Summit at the Vatican. What do you expect from this significant event?

There is no one more worthy of our protection than our children; yet our world is failing to live up to this duty. Last year was one of the worst on record for children in conflict zones. Over 473 million children were impacted by war; if they resided in a single country, it would be the third most populous on Earth!

So, there is a lot of work to be done. And I am thankful to His Holiness Pope Francis for convening this summit to bring together many different perspectives. He has long been a champion of children's rights, and I greatly admire his efforts to put the wellbeing of children at the forefront of the world's priorities."
