On September 20th, 2023, Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan visited the NBC's office where she granted an interview and sat down with TODAY's Hoda Kotb and discusses the situation of the globe and how she continues to find optimism for the future.

When asked by Hoda about the state of the world and how in a dark place it is in, and how through her speeches, she brings out the light and how do you see – how do you find that hope? And how does she convey it? Her Majesty replied, "Well, you know, you're right. I think our world is at an inflection point, you know, and it seems like polarization is really a defining feature of our world. Whenever we see somebody who disagrees with us, it has become natural to demonize them."

Her Majesty continue with, "And when you see everything through a political lens, it becomes very difficult to come together over any issue. And the irony is that the issues that we're facing today, from climate change, to migration, to inequality – those all need solutions that come from collaboration. So, if we're not talking to one another, we're not going to be able to find resolution to some of these issues. And I just feel like, we need more engagement that is rooted in optimism and hope, rather than fear.

And, you know, there's this wave of populism around the world that's using people's fears and insecurities for leaders to gain popularity. And that's not finding – that's not very helpful, it's not finding solutions. So I think we need to focus more, not on the why, for example, when it comes to climate change, but on the how: How do we find solutions?"

She also discusses raising her four children in public and guiding them through social media and technology.

Speaking about HRH the Crown Prince and her other children, Her Majesty replied, saying this "It's just scary how time flies, right? I mean, you know, as parents, I think it's our job to, you know, take care of our kids until they are old enough to go out into the world… but that doesn't make it easy when that day comes, actually. And, you know, in the span of three months, from the end of March to the beginning of June, I had two children get married and two graduate. I mean, what was I thinking?"

When speaking about being now an empty nester, she replied this,"I'm an empty nester right now, you know, and it's just this wave of emotions. You know, with Iman, it was a new experience for our family because she's the first one to get married. And there was so much planning and anticipation, culminated in a really beautiful and emotional day. Nothing can prepare you for the moment you see your daughter in that white dress. You know, the mixture of emotions – pride at the strong and independent woman she's become, joy for her joy, sadness for her leaving home… it all comes together and nothing can prepare you for that."

Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania Al Abdullah were presented with the 2022 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity on Saturday February 26th.

The medal was bestowed during a ceremony at Abu Dhabi's Founders Memorial in recognition of Their Majesties' efforts to promote human brotherhood, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.

FOKAL, a Haitian humanitarian organization, was also honored with the prize.

Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmad Al Tayyib greeted Their Majesties, citing them as role models for fraternity and tolerance in a recorded video message broadcast at the occasion.

He expressed gratitude for His Majesty's ongoing efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and protect Islamic and Christian holy places in Jerusalem, as well as his support for the Palestinian people, and praised Jordan and the Jordanian people for their efforts in hosting refugees.

He also praised Her Majesty's strong involvement in caring for women, children, and the impoverished, as well as in encouraging brotherhood and love among people.

Pope Francis lauded Their Majesties' dedication to promoting the ideals of cooperation and communication across different religious traditions, fighting prejudice, and empowering young people and women in another recorded message.

"By promoting human fraternity ideals, you have helped to make Jordan an example of tolerance and coexistence," the Pope stated.

"The prize that is being awarded to you today is a recognition that also belongs to all Jordanians who, despite many obstacles, pursue the road of peace, moderation, and the rejection of violence with determination and bravery," he added.

Their Majesties have contributed the award money to pay off the financial obligations of impoverished Jordanian women who are unable to repay debts they took to sustain their families.

The award is organized by the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, an independent international committee established to promote human fraternity values in communities worldwide and to fulfill the aspirations of the Document on Human Fraternity, which was signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmad Al Tayyib and Pope Francis.

The event was attended by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, members of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, and members of the award's judging committee.

Her Majesty yesterday(Thursday) was in Turkey to attend the Istanbul 2018 TRT World Forum where she gave the keynote speech. In her speech, she called on the global community to persevere in its struggle to achieve peace, justice, and security, urging nations to “confront the harshest realities of our world without losing sight of our ideals.”

Her Majesty also highlighted humanity’s long-term gains in making our world a safer, more inclusive place. “The headlines may lead us to believe that the world is gradually becoming less secure – but the trend-lines suggest otherwise,” she explained.

The forum was also attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and First Lady Emine Erdogan, with the President delivering an address at the forum’s closing Thursday evening.

She also highlighted Jordan and Turkey’s long history of cooperation, and their common commitment towards the refugees they are hosting within their borders.

She also reflected on the passing of three-year-old Syrian Alan Kurdi in 2015, who became a symbol of the struggles of more than 5.5 million refugees after a photograph of his lifeless body washed up on shore went viral.

“For a brief moment, this snapshot of senseless loss seemed poised to serve as a turning point in the global refugee crisis,” Her Majesty recalled. However, “almost as suddenly as it had appeared, concern for the refugee crisis once again receded, a casualty of the ebb and flow of human compassion.”

Noting that more than 10,000 people have since drowned attempting to make the same dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean, the Queen stressed that news of human misery has now become inescapable.

“Every day, we are bombarded with evidence of suffering – until images that once felt painfully familiar gradually stop being painful,” she said. She continued with “One of the key facets of human nature is the universal impulse to help those in need. But, in the face of mass atrocities, too often, we fail to move decisively,”, citing the example of global inaction in the face of genocide against the Muslim Rohingya minority in Myanmar.

She attributed this to a phenomenon known as psychic numbing. “We recognize a single person’s suffering as a tragedy, but, as the number of those affected piles up, that tragedy begins to lose its emotional grip,” she explained.
