Her Majesty Queen Rania went to view the displays and installations created by participating designers during her visit at the Amman Design Week’s (ADW) Ras El Ain Hangar exhibition in downtown Amman on Wednesday October 9th

During her visit where she was accompanied by ADW Director, Rana Beiruti, and Curator of the Hangar exhibition, Nora Al Sayeh-Holtrop from Bahrain, she viewed the Hangar’s indoor installations and designs produced by over 75 local and regional participants working in the Arts sector.

She also stopped by the student exhibition, which hosts work created by 33 students from 14 local schools and universities during a six-month mentorship program.

She toured the eco friendly outdoor installation the Minor Paradises. The exhibition was created to reimagine the traditional notion of an Arab garden. She took a look at a collection of waterless public gardens that require minimal water consumption to grow.

Her Majesty also visited a number of pop-up shops that sell the works of Jordanian designers and creatives at the Hangar which include those set up by Design Institute Amman, a multidisciplinary design education and training center in Jabal Amman, Takween, a program that aims to support designers and creative entrepreneurs in Jordan, and Dezain, a platform supporting product and fashion designers in Jordan.

Under the theme of “Possibilities”, ADW’s third edition is running until October 12 across the three districts of Ras El Ain, Jabal Amman, and Jabal Al Weibdeh. ADW features more than 100 events in 55 participating spaces, and showcases the works of more than 250 creators, designers, and artisans from 13 countries.

This year’s ADW is being held in partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality, sponsored by Zain Jordan, Investbank, Aramex, the Jordan Tourism Board, Uber, JOTUN Arabia, and Art Media.

On Sunday August 25th, Her Majesty Queen Rania paid a visit to the Amman Design Week (ADW)'s offices located in Jabal Amman, where she was briefed on the final preparations for the upcoming nine-day citywide event.

ADW Director, Rana Beiruti, explained that the program’s third edition which will be taking place from October 4th to 12th, will be centered in three main districts; Ras El Ain, Jabal Amman, and Jabal Al-Weibdeh. With theme “Possibilities,” ADW 2019 will also include events and exhibitions at more than 50 participating spaces across Amman.

Following her visit, Her Majesty took a tour of the nearby area, stepping into a number of offices, shops, and small businesses.

Launched in 2016 with the support of Her Majesty, ADW aims to showcase the designs and talents of local, regional, and international designers, and establish Amman as a regional hub for innovation, expression, and experimentation. It also empowers designers and craftspeople year-round through learning programs, direct mentorship, and personalized guidance.

On Wednesday Her Majesty Queen Rania launched the second annual edition of Amman Design Week (ADW)  in an event held under her patronage at the Ras El Ain Hangar in downtown Amman. This year's theme is ‘Design Moves Life Moves Design.’

An initiative of Her Majesty, ADW 2017 will open its doors to the public from October 6th to 14th, and will present a comprehensive program of exhibitions, workshops, talks, tours, and events under

Her Majesty was received by Greater Amman Municipality Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh, and ADW Co-directors Abeer Seikaly and Rana Beiruti.

I can see HRH Princess Zeina Al Feisal, (Her Majesty's sister in law and wife to Prince Feisal), Princess Alia Tabbaa former wife of Prince Feisal bin Hussein(seems to also be in attendance). Also in attendance, in addition to several public and private sector leaders, Jordanian and Arab media figures, and design enthusiasts.

Queen Rania toured the Hangar Exhibition, where she viewed the works of more than 100 regional and international designers hailing from the United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, India, Germany, France, and the United States.

Throughout the nine-day event, the nearby Crafts District, also located in Ras El Ain, will feature several demonstration booths, pop-up shops, cultural activities, and food options.

Featuring a prominent educational element, ADW 2017 will present its first-ever Student Exhibition, showcasing the works of student members of ADW’s year-round mentorship program. This year’s program also comprises a diverse selection of workshops and panel discussions, which aim to highlight design’s unseen impact on our daily lives.

Drawing on the event’s theme of ‘motion’, ADW 2017 will extend beyond the Ras El Ain area, with activities held at more than 50 sites around the city, including galleries, shops, institutes, universities and other public spaces.

This year's edition of ADW focuses large efforts on increasing the event’s reach among members of the public through programs that target schools in governorates, as well as field visits and mobile experiments.

Speaking at the event, Beiruti said that the program for ADW 2017 builds on the success experienced during the event’s pilot in 2016. “After focusing last year on raising awareness on the ever-presence of design in our lives, this year’s program tackles the power of design to move the world around us,” she added.

“Design is a movement that seeks to beautify while also serving as a medium for positive change,” Beiruti explained. “It empowers people to take control, make an impact, and rise up to challenge the status quo.”

In turn, Seikaly highlighted that this year’s edition of ADW reinforces the focus on the key pillars of the event, such as empowering local designers, education, social transformation, and paying tribute to Jordan’s cultural heritage.

“This personifies the year’s theme of movement, as we are endeavoring to contribute towards creating a potent and sustainable design movement in Jordan among current and future generations,” she added.

For his part, Ahmad Humeid, the curator of this year’s Hangar Exhibition, stated that the Hangar Exhibition is one of the key landmarks of ADW, offering a snapshot of the state of Amman’s design landscape and the remarkable potential possessed by local and regional designers.

“The exhibition will challenge our understanding of design and its ability to push the boundaries of physical reality and the elements of material, scale, form and function,” he said.
