On September 19th, A high level meeting which is exploring ways to drive forward global response to refugee education crisis was held in Amman under Her Majesty's patronage.

The meeting which was convened by The Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF), Save the Children, and the MIT Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) addressed one of the critical humanitarian issues born out of the global refugee crisis.

It brought together keyholders notably philanthropists, business leaders, donor institutions, and international and regional development organizations, and was chaired by Hassan Jameel, Community Jameel President, and Kevin Watkins, Save the Children UK Chief Executive Officer.

The Amman meeting followed a high-level roundtable held at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2019, which Queen Rania also attended, and which was chaired by Hassan Jameel and Helle Thorning Schmidt, then Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children International and former Prime Minister of Denmark. The meeting was also part of the build-up to the Global Refugee Forum, which will be held in Geneva in December by UNHCR.

Speaking at the roundtable, Hassan Jameel, Community Jameel President, said, “At Community Jameel, we recognize the importance of education. By supporting teachers’ wellbeing, in conjunction with improving quality teaching practices and student learning, we have the opportunity to re-establish the transformative role of education in vulnerable children's lives.”

Save the Children UK Chief Executive, Kevin Watkins, said, “Save the Children is celebrating 100 years of humanitarian and development experience and we are delighted to be partnering with such high-level, global philanthropists on this critical agenda.

“Over half of the world’s 25 million refugees are children. If those children were a single country, that country would be the country with the world’s worst education indicators. More than half of the world’s school-aged refugee children – 4 million in total – are out of school. These children are being denied a source of hope for the future and the passport to a better future. This is one of the greatest moral challenges facing our generation – and turning a blind eye is not an option.”

Among the attendees were senior representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UAE-based Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, the Saudi-based Alwaleed Philanthropies, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank, the LEGO Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the World Bank.

Jordan has a strong track record of welcoming and supporting refugees, and has become a leading venue for innovation in humanitarian development. Contributing to the country’s efforts in this field are QRF’s various technology-driven solutions to development challenges, including the foundation’s online education initiative, Edraak.

On Wednesday,Her Majesty visited Sweifieh Secondary School for Girls, to launch the online educational platform Edraak’s mathematics curricula for students from kindergarten to grade five (K-5). This new platform is making comprehensive mathematics materials available for free to school learners of all ages on the Edraak K-12 platform.

Her Majesty was joined by Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Walid Maani, Edraak CEO, Shireen Yacoub, and the school’s principal, Laila Shobaki, for a focus group discussion with teachers, students, and parents who have benefited from the K-12 platform.

The Queen asked the students about the impact the platform has had on their performance and grades. Parents and teachers also shared their experiences with the K-12 platform with Her Majesty, explaining how it has allowed them to support children’s learning journeys.

Queen Rania then met with former Tawjihi students who completed mathematics, English, chemistry, and physics secondary stage courses on Edraak in previous years, and were present to guide current students on the platform’s courses.  She also attended a training course, where Edraak experts instructed teachers on how to use the K-12 platform and create virtual classrooms.

The introduction of K-5 mathematics materials follows the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development’s (QRF) successful launch of the Edraak K-12 platform in September 2018, which saw the release of mathematics materials for grades six to 12. The platform’s now completed K-12 mathematics materials include over 1,200 instructional videos and 7,500 exercises that range in difficulty, and apply motivational gamification strategies.

According to Her Majesty's website, The platform’s mathematical content was created following research conducted by Edraak on how to appeal to young learners in a relatable, easy, and seamless manner.

Based on Edraak’s findings that Arab children between first and third grades spend much of their time watching cartoons, its team incorporated several cartoon characters into its mathematical stream to assist children as they solve problems. However, for Arab fourth graders, who typically experience an educational decline during this transitional year, Edraak designed a puppet named Kurkum to serve as a fun and engaging bridge between teachers and students.

Speaking at the event, Yacoub highlighted Edraak’s efforts to provide free, high-quality education that caters to the needs of school learners across the Arab world. “This achievement would not have been possible without the collaborations and efforts of various experts from QRF, Queen Rania Teacher Academy, and Google.org,” Yacoub said, adding that Edraak aspires to forge new partnerships to expand the platform’s scope and cover other subjects.

Yacoub also thanked Edraak’s partners in the local telecommunications sector – namely Zain Jordan, Orange Jordan, and Umniah – who allowed access to the K-12 platform using minimum internet data, making it accessible to those living in remote and disadvantaged areas, including refugees.

Finally Her Majesty Queen Rania has launched the Edraak K-12 platform earlier today. She expressed her optimism that the platform will help address the region’s urgent need for free and accessible quality education materials, based on modern teaching methods in the Arabic language.

The Edraak K-12 platform will caters to school-aged children throughout the Arab World, and an expansion of Edraak.org, the leading Arabic Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform for adult learners.

The launch ceremony was held at their offices in Amman, and was attended by Minister of Education, Dr. Azmi Mahafza, Minister of ICT, Mothanna Gharaibeh, CEO of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF), Bassem Saad, and CEO of Edraak, Shireen Yacoub.

While addressing local and regional media outlets, she said that this gathering is opportunity for introducing everyone to the platform’s new content, the technologies behind it, and the next steps in growing it.

“We started by launching Math materials for grades six to twelve, but we are not stopping here because our students deserve much more than this,” she said, asking everyone to picture how the K-12 platform is likely to revolutionize learning for future generations.

“Today, the internet is replete with e-learning resources that students around the world can utilize in conjunction with their core school curricula as means for revision, practice, or learning support. Unfortunately, most of these resources are in English, and hence Jordanian and Arab students are likely to miss out,”’ she added.

She later explained that this gap constituted the basis for launching Edraak K-12, which aims to provide children, parents, and teachers with educational resources similar to those readily available online in English.

“Education in Jordan and the region is in need of an overhaul. Reforming education requires focusing on multiple interconnected facets, including infrastructure, teacher training, curricula modernization, and early childhood education. Initiatives similar to Edraak K-12 are also an integral facet to the reform process,” she said.

She also added that education reform will not happen overnight, nor will it happen within a year or even within five years, but assured everyone that the internet is the one tool to help achieve this reform more rapidly.

“I have always said that when it comes to education, patience isn’t really a virtue because taking our time in improving our systems will come at the expense of our children,” she said.

Highlighting the versatility of the platform, Her Majesty stressed that students have a lot to gain from the platform’s ease of access via phone or tablet, adding that regardless of the time and place, students can repetitively watch compact and comprehensive lessons in line with school curricula and assess their knowledge through exercises on the platform.

“I urge parents and teachers to introduce their children and students to the world of online learning and encourage them to capitalize on the K-12 platform. After all, it was built for them,” she emphasized.

Her Majesty also explained how the platform was designed to assist teachers by helping them create virtual classrooms, use content and exercises to plan lessons, and learn more about efficient instruction techniques. She also expanded on the platform’s potential uses for parents, who can leverage it to support and keep track of their children’s learning journey, and reduce their dependence on costly private tutoring.

“I am positive that the platform will lessen our struggles as parents. All parents must have felt stuck trying to help their children,” Her Majesty added.

Her Majesty thanked Jordanian telecom companies, who were present at the ceremony, for their faith in the importance of education and their efforts in making the platform accessible to everyone.

Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan welcome the e-commerce giant Alibaba's Founder and Executive Chairman Mr. Jack Ma's brief visit to Jordan earlier today at the Al Husseinya Palace for lunch.

After a brief lunch and discussion Her Majesty and Mr. Jack Ma's paid visit to the EDRAAK new offices were they were welcomed by Edraak CEO Shireen Yacoub, and were briefed by the company’s team on its most recent work and its plans moving forward Mr. Ma's foundation. The Jack Ma Foundation (JMF) announced a first stage grant of three million USD to support the mission of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF) and its work in education in Jordan, with a particular focus on Edraak, the free online platform for Arabic open educational resources (OERs) and the Queen Rania Teacher Academy (QRTA).

This step marks the beginning of a fruitful relationship between JMF and QRF, and demonstrates both Ma’s and Queen Rania’s passion for education and the mutual belief in the power of innovative methods and new technology to address global educational challenges.

The Foundation's General Secretary, Ms. Xiuhong Yu, recognized the challenges faced by young women, girls, refugees, and students in Jordan’s rural areas, expressing her hope that the grant will strengthen the foundation’s ability to improve education for these vulnerable groups.

“The vision and leadership of the Queen Rania Foundation to improve the quality of education for Jordan and the region through its world-class and innovative programs is truly inspiring,” she said. “In China, the Jack Ma Foundation is focused on improving the livelihood of rural communities through education and we look forward to learning from and sharing best practices with the Queen Rania Foundation on headmaster and teacher training.”

This comes at a pivotal time for the entire Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where more than 15 million children are out of school due to armed conflict and displacement, and many lack access to quality education, an issue exacerbated by the region’s refugee crisis.

QRF CEO, Ms. Haifa Al-Attia, thanked JMF, noting that the grant will provide educational opportunities to learners in Jordan and across the Middle East, both through Edraak and QRTA.

“We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Jack Ma Foundation, which has once again distinguished itself as an invaluable champion of education across the globe,” she said. “Through this grant, we will continue to not only deliver quality education to young Jordanians, but also to children across the Arab World through our digital platform Edraak.”

They later toured the new offices, met with a number of engineers from Google, who were on a visit from the U.S. They also stopped by Edraak’s studio, where school teachers were filming educational content for the K-12 program. The teachers and content creators explained to Ma the need for high quality open educational resources in Arabic, while stressing the potential that Edraak’s new platform has to revamp K-12 education in the region.

Queen Rania also accompanied Ma to the King Hussein Business Park, where he joined a group of 20 Jordanian venture capitalists, incubators, and enablers in a closed meeting to discuss the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Jordan. The meeting was followed by an open interactive Q&A session with 60 Jordanian startups and entrepreneurs.

While in Jordan, he also visited the Queen Rania Teachers Academy (QRTA), where CEO Haif Banayyan briefed him on different programs implemented by the academy.

Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania accompanied by HRH Crown Prince Hussein departed from Queen Alia International Airport for Davos, Switzerland for the annual World Economic Forum, last Monday.  The World Economic Forums runs from January 23rd-26th

To read more here.

While His Majesty was in meetings, Her Majesty attended other conferences, unfortunately on at this point I don't really know which ones. Unfortunately not many pictures came out from her attendance, except Swiss Media RTR Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha posting a video of Her Majesty arriving.
