UNICEF ‘Champions for Children’ Event in New York

On the side-lines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah attended UNICEF's Champions for Children: Child Rights at the Heart of the SDGs reception event in New York on Sunday September 17th.

The event, hosted by UNICEF's Executive Director, Catherine Russell, and featuring US First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as a keynote speaker, aims to put children at the centre of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by emphasising their empowerment and the need to invest in their future.

According to the publication Progress on Children's Well-Being: Centering Child Rights in the 2030 Agenda, two-thirds of child-related indicators are falling short of meeting the 2030 SDGs target. According to the research, only 6% of the world's kid population, living in just 11 nations, has met 50% of child-related benchmarks as of today. If current trends continue, only 60 countries - home to only 25% of the world's children - are likely to have met their targets by 2030, leaving about 1.9 billion children in 140 countries behind.

The research weaves together over 20 years of data from over 190 nations, comparing where governments are now to where they want to be in the next seven years, and finding difficulties and opportunities for expedited action. The findings paint a mixed picture of development and regress in relation to global goals.

The report also demonstrates that with strong national commitment, good policies, and enough money, faster development is conceivable, with certain low and lower-middle-income countries making the fastest pace.

The event featured a part on methods to champion children in areas such as health, education, climate, and peace-building activities, and was attended by youth advocates, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, and numerous high-profile visitors.

Other prominent speakers included Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Belgians and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, actor Orlando Bloom.
