On Wednesday, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah paid a visit to Al Shobak in Ma'an Governorate, where she met with leaders of local organizations, owners of income-generating initiatives, and local officials.

Her Majesty's visit follows the launch of a community-based funding initiative in Ma'an Governorate. The initiative, which is supported by the Royal Hashemite Court, allows citizens to start their own income-generating ventures.

Speaking to a group of award recipients at Shobak Castle's tourist center, Her Majesty expressed her delight at being able to meet with them, despite the COVID-19 epidemic frequently making such trips difficult.

She also encouraged the group to get the vaccination in order to safeguard their family against the virus and its variations.

Queen Rania praised the recipients' commitment and expressed her delight at hearing about the progress of their initiatives and their rising success. She also emphasized the good example of a local lady, Sabha Al Tawara, who operates a modest sewing business in Al Shobak and whom Her Majesty had met earlier in the day.

Al Tawara's tailoring shop, a recipient of the community-based grant scheme, was one of 100 income-generating projects across the kingdom to receive an increase in financial assistance last year, as announced by Her Majesty in October 2020 in response to the pandemic's crippling effects on small businesses.

“Ms. Sabha has gone on to develop four more job possibilities, empowering additional women in her area,” said the Queen.

Ma'an Governor Dr. Mohammad Fayez, Ma'an Tourism Director Dr. Yasin Salah, Al Shobak Societies Coalition Head Khalil Hawartha, and Visitors Center Supervisor Mohammad Hleilat greeted Her Majesty at Shobak Castle.

During the meeting, she was briefed on the development of the scheme's income-generating projects by Community Centers Association (CCA) President Dr. Firyal Saleh.

To far, the plan, which was implemented by the CCA in collaboration with 11 local organizations, has offered loans and business advice to 220 families in Ma'an, supporting commercial, service sector, vocational, and agricultural initiatives in the governorate.

In turn, Queen Rania emphasized the critical role of local organizations and associations in meeting the needs and problems of their communities. “We look to you to understand how to best focus our assistance,” Her Majesty stated, adding that “at the end of the day, we're all one family, and we want every lady, man, and kid in the community to be well.”

Her Majesty also advised people in attendance to safeguard themselves and their families by receiving COVID-19 vaccinations, emphasizing that immunization is the only way to ensure economic recovery and a return to normalcy.

Queen Rania stated that she and His Majesty King Abdullah were glad for receiving the vaccination early in the epidemic in order to protect themselves and others around them. She also warned against the propagation of disinformation about the vaccination, especially if more infectious COVID variations develop throughout the world.

“We must all urge each other to get the vaccination — for our children, our parents, and our families,” she said.

Her Majesty also paid a visit to the Al Shobak Charitable Society for Women, which strives to empower local women by developing their skills and giving them with economic possibilities. The Queen inspected the society's facilities, accompanied by Society President Basma Habahbeh, inspecting its productive kitchen and interacting with its beneficiaries.

The Al Shobak Philanthropic Society for Women, founded in 2009, runs a variety of economic and charitable initiatives, including the utilization of homegrown Al Shobak apples in the manufacturing of apple cider vinegar.

On September 19th, A high level meeting which is exploring ways to drive forward global response to refugee education crisis was held in Amman under Her Majesty's patronage.

The meeting which was convened by The Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF), Save the Children, and the MIT Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) addressed one of the critical humanitarian issues born out of the global refugee crisis.

It brought together keyholders notably philanthropists, business leaders, donor institutions, and international and regional development organizations, and was chaired by Hassan Jameel, Community Jameel President, and Kevin Watkins, Save the Children UK Chief Executive Officer.

The Amman meeting followed a high-level roundtable held at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2019, which Queen Rania also attended, and which was chaired by Hassan Jameel and Helle Thorning Schmidt, then Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children International and former Prime Minister of Denmark. The meeting was also part of the build-up to the Global Refugee Forum, which will be held in Geneva in December by UNHCR.

Speaking at the roundtable, Hassan Jameel, Community Jameel President, said, “At Community Jameel, we recognize the importance of education. By supporting teachers’ wellbeing, in conjunction with improving quality teaching practices and student learning, we have the opportunity to re-establish the transformative role of education in vulnerable children's lives.”

Save the Children UK Chief Executive, Kevin Watkins, said, “Save the Children is celebrating 100 years of humanitarian and development experience and we are delighted to be partnering with such high-level, global philanthropists on this critical agenda.

“Over half of the world’s 25 million refugees are children. If those children were a single country, that country would be the country with the world’s worst education indicators. More than half of the world’s school-aged refugee children – 4 million in total – are out of school. These children are being denied a source of hope for the future and the passport to a better future. This is one of the greatest moral challenges facing our generation – and turning a blind eye is not an option.”

Among the attendees were senior representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UAE-based Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, the Saudi-based Alwaleed Philanthropies, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank, the LEGO Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the World Bank.

Jordan has a strong track record of welcoming and supporting refugees, and has become a leading venue for innovation in humanitarian development. Contributing to the country’s efforts in this field are QRF’s various technology-driven solutions to development challenges, including the foundation’s online education initiative, Edraak.

It is a new start to Her Majesty's public work schedule as she began by meeting with Al-Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans’ educational scholarships program recipient during an orientation session held at the Bisharat Golf Club in Amman.

Welcomed by the Fund’s Director, Ibrahim Al Ahmad, and Bisharat Golf Club Director, Julia Bisharat, where she addressed the 146 scholarship recipients for the current academic year.

Her Majesty expressed pride in the students and excitement for what the next chapter has in store for them. “I consider myself among my own children, so I will speak to you just as I have spoken to Al Hussein, Iman, and Salma when they graduated high school and started college,” she said.

She explained and reminded to the beneficiaries that their choices and actions are what define them as they embark on this new journey, conveying a desire for them to form friendships that will positively influence them and add value to their lives and that while the staff at Al-Aman Fund will continue to support and guide them towards opportunities, it is on the students themselves to be responsible for their future.

She also highlighted the importance of having self-confidence because it “impedes us from digressing and giving up our ambitions to follow temptations.” She also that the beneficiaries will remain proud of the Al-Aman Fund family for all its efforts in supporting them and seeking out opportunities for them. “All of you constitute one single family, and I hope this urges you to care for each other,” she said.

At the orientation, Her Majesty joined students in a training workshop titled “Six Thinking Hats,” run by a member of Al-Aman’s board of trustees, Laith Al Qasem. Among a variety of activities, the workshop introduced students to creative thinking processes. Her Majesty also participated in another workshop titled “Bridge Building.”

The fund is an initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF), Al-Aman Fund for the Future of Orphans aims to provide young orphans with opportunities to obtain higher education or university degrees, attend community college, or receive vocational training.

Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan welcome the e-commerce giant Alibaba's Founder and Executive Chairman Mr. Jack Ma's brief visit to Jordan earlier today at the Al Husseinya Palace for lunch.

After a brief lunch and discussion Her Majesty and Mr. Jack Ma's paid visit to the EDRAAK new offices were they were welcomed by Edraak CEO Shireen Yacoub, and were briefed by the company’s team on its most recent work and its plans moving forward Mr. Ma's foundation. The Jack Ma Foundation (JMF) announced a first stage grant of three million USD to support the mission of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF) and its work in education in Jordan, with a particular focus on Edraak, the free online platform for Arabic open educational resources (OERs) and the Queen Rania Teacher Academy (QRTA).

This step marks the beginning of a fruitful relationship between JMF and QRF, and demonstrates both Ma’s and Queen Rania’s passion for education and the mutual belief in the power of innovative methods and new technology to address global educational challenges.

The Foundation's General Secretary, Ms. Xiuhong Yu, recognized the challenges faced by young women, girls, refugees, and students in Jordan’s rural areas, expressing her hope that the grant will strengthen the foundation’s ability to improve education for these vulnerable groups.

“The vision and leadership of the Queen Rania Foundation to improve the quality of education for Jordan and the region through its world-class and innovative programs is truly inspiring,” she said. “In China, the Jack Ma Foundation is focused on improving the livelihood of rural communities through education and we look forward to learning from and sharing best practices with the Queen Rania Foundation on headmaster and teacher training.”

This comes at a pivotal time for the entire Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where more than 15 million children are out of school due to armed conflict and displacement, and many lack access to quality education, an issue exacerbated by the region’s refugee crisis.

QRF CEO, Ms. Haifa Al-Attia, thanked JMF, noting that the grant will provide educational opportunities to learners in Jordan and across the Middle East, both through Edraak and QRTA.

“We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Jack Ma Foundation, which has once again distinguished itself as an invaluable champion of education across the globe,” she said. “Through this grant, we will continue to not only deliver quality education to young Jordanians, but also to children across the Arab World through our digital platform Edraak.”

They later toured the new offices, met with a number of engineers from Google, who were on a visit from the U.S. They also stopped by Edraak’s studio, where school teachers were filming educational content for the K-12 program. The teachers and content creators explained to Ma the need for high quality open educational resources in Arabic, while stressing the potential that Edraak’s new platform has to revamp K-12 education in the region.

Queen Rania also accompanied Ma to the King Hussein Business Park, where he joined a group of 20 Jordanian venture capitalists, incubators, and enablers in a closed meeting to discuss the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Jordan. The meeting was followed by an open interactive Q&A session with 60 Jordanian startups and entrepreneurs.

While in Jordan, he also visited the Queen Rania Teachers Academy (QRTA), where CEO Haif Banayyan briefed him on different programs implemented by the academy.

On Sunday April 29th, Her Majesty Queen Rania received Minister of Education, Dr. Omar Razzaz, Economic Adviser to His Majesty King Abdullah, Dr. Mohamad Al Ississ, and several members of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF) team for an update on the achievements made under the National Strategy for Human Resource Development.

The meeting started with a discussion on progress made in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECED). This includes the establishment of 418 public and private kindergarten classrooms across the country, with plans to launch 315 more, as well as UNICEF’s modernization of an additional 50 kindergarten classes. Additionally, 1,200 students and 1,100 parents completed school readiness training. This also included the completed construction of 40 primary and secondary school, 27 schools that have been expanded, with an additional 171 new classrooms, and the number of rented buildings have decreased from 23% to 21% in the academic year.

The meeting also addressed the status of recent graduates of the Teacher Education Professional Diploma, which was established by the Queen Rania teacher Academy (QRTA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, University of Jordan, and University College London’s Institute of Education.

In addition to training the diploma’s second cohort, which consists of 480 teachers, QRTA is currently developing a vocational program on early childhood development, which is set to launch in October 2018.

The meeting included a conversation on the headway made by the National Center for Curriculum Development in revising science and mathematics curricula and assessment methods for kindergarten to grade 12 (K-12).

Work is currently under way to develop a comprehensive in-service training program for teachers, aiming to equip them with skills to teach the upgraded and modernized curricula and improve students’ performance. International education companies, specialized in the development of modern school books and learning aids, will train teachers on how to teach the new curricula in collaboration with the National Center for Curriculum Development, Ministry of Education, and QRTA.

She was also briefed on measures that have been taken to update Tawjihi exams, including allowing students to repeat their exams an unlimited number of times.

It is a new week and new engagements, Happy new week folks.

On this Sunday, Her Majesty Queen Rania attended the Capacity Building Open day promoting Health conscious practices in schools hosted at the Royal Health Awareness Society’s (RHAS) Day, where 375 Jordanian principals and teachers took part in a number of health-related workshops and interactive sessions.

The event was organized in recognition of the 108 schools that received the Healthy Schools National Accreditation for the 2016-2017 academic year, with the aim of improving awareness of health-conscious practices among educators.

According to Her Office, she was welcomed and accompanied by RHAS Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Rami Farraj, and RHAS Director General, Hanin Odeh. During her tour she stopped by several workshops focusing on effective change management, school nutrition programs, utilization of health education technologies, and the role of physical activity in preventing diseases. Educators also took part in sessions on subjects including time management, community mobilization, and enhancing schools’ role in tobacco control.

The event included a ceremony, attended by Minister of Education Omar Razzaz, celebrating last year’s recipients of the Healthy Schools National Accreditation, of whom 17 received the gold accreditation, 30 the silver, and 61 the bronze. In addition, eight schools were awarded ‘Health Competency’ status, allowing them to re-enroll in the program for the next academic year.

Established by RHAS in 2008, Healthy Schools is a national accreditation program implemented in partnership with the ministries of health and education. Focusing on public and preventive health education, the program aims to create health-promoting environments within Jordanian schools, reflecting positively on student’s physical and social development, as well as their academic performance.

RHAS, an initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development, was established in 2005 to promote health awareness and empower Jordanians to adopt healthy lifestyles and behaviors. Targeting schoolchildren, youth, and the community at large, RHAS aims to instill the foundations of preventive healthcare, which ultimately contributes to the wellbeing and safety of Jordanian society.
